Poem: "Where in the World"
Oct. 29th, 2022 06:09 pmThis is the free perk poem for the October 4, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl meeting its $150 goal. It came out of the September 6, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl inspired by a prompt from
rix_scaedu. It also fills the "Where in the world did you come from?" square in my 9-1-22 card for the Land of Oz Bingo fest.
Warning: Do not read with mouth full!
"Where in the World"
Cats fall asleep in
the strangest places:
tucked into hollow stumps
or the laps of statues,
pooled in sinks or
poured into bowls like
so much fuzzy liquid,
perilously perched upon
shower curtain rods
above all that water,
folded oddly into boxes
but still not quite fitting neatly,
half out of hanging planters,
wound around stair railings
or over the tops of dining chairs,
melted over a computer monitor
like a furry, purring curtain,
facedown in a foosball table
or a pile of board games after
having had utterly too much fun,
in the dish rack, on the dishes,
that were clean a minute ago,
cuddled in a guitar case making
entirely the wrong kind of music,
sprawled on top of books
lined up on a high shelf,
slipped inside pillowcases,
passed out in catnip cartons
or inside cases of light beer,
hanging from overhead pipes
like hairy chandeliers,
even the tiny kittens
dreaming in cleavage or
curled up in cup holders
or sleeping in lost slippers,
pressed between the cushions
of a corduroy couch, unseen
until sat upon, then suddenly
appearing with a screech --
leaving people to wonder,
"Where in the world
did you come from?"
