These are the content notes for "That Big Booming Drum."
"Orvil mainly listens to powwow music. There's something in the energy of that big booming drum, in the intensity of the singing, like an urgency that feels specifically Indian. He likes the power the sound of a chorus of voices makes too, those high-pitched wailed harmonies, how you can't tell how many singers there are, and how sometimes it sounds like ten singers, sometimes like a hundred."

A powwow is tribal gathering full of singing, dancing, and drumming. It has a long history.
Native American dance includes many styles and different types of regalia.
Drums play a vital role in tribal life. Customarily they use a large powwow drum played by several older men. The group of drummers is called "the Drum." Some tribes include women and youths. But if you put a bunch of bored Indians within reach of something that can be pounded, someone will flip it over and start drumming. I saw a video of a lacrosse team doing that with a bucket, which sadly I could not relocate for this instance. It was one of the most quintessentially tribal things I've ever seen.
Across almost all tribes, elders are respected. This refers primarily to old people, but can also cover younger people who have amassed and shared a significant body of knowledge. Elders have a lot of power in tribal culture. Here are some customary ways of respecting elders.
Knapping is a traditional way of making stone tools and weapons such as arrowheads. These videos introduce a knapper's tools, working a core, and making an arrowhead.

Frybread can be served plain, topped with ground meat and vegetables, or topped with fruit. It's a lot like a big puffy donut, but not necessarily sweet. Eating it as an occasional treat is fine. Eating it all the time will kill you. Just like donuts. Frybread is what you get by trying to make traditional corncakes with commodity foods. Here's a Hopi boiled corn cake, and an Eastern Woodlands skillet corn cake. This one uses pumpkin, corn, and butter (historically, bison or bear fat, or sunflower oil). Explore some frybread recipes.
These are some Native American activist T-shirts. Shiv buys one that reads, "They told me I was different. Best compliment ever." These T-shirts have assorted colors and designs. Shiv buys one with a lynx.
This is Shiv's Navajo rug.
Historically, pemmican was hand stuffed into casings and twisted into links. This recipe runs about 300 calories per serving. While bison and venison are more common, salmon makes fantastic pemmican.
Women's Fancy Shawl Dance is popular at powwows.
Stickball is related to lacrosse, its more professional descendant. The original version is sometimes called "the little war" for its level of chaos and mayhem.
The stickball team won a yearling male bison, worth about $1,850, which is a fine prize for a powwow competition and nice tender eating. Many Terramagne-American tribes love rough games and gambling, and young men will eagerly take on outsiders who dare to compete. Teams often dicker over what they have to bet, until roughly equal stakes are agreed. Since stickball rules consist of "you can't touch the ball with your hands" and "points are scored by reaching the goal with the ball," you can't really cheat and a team with superpowers has a big edge. You never know what medicine an opponent might bring to a game, and that's part of the fun.
Hides can be tanned as leather or with the fur on. Start with good preparation. Many different tools can be used for fleshing a hide, and everyone has their favorites. Among the traditional options are seashells such as oyster or clam shells, which are sharp enough to get the membrane off without cutting through the hide. Some people still like to use these, especially for ritual or demonstration purposes. Other folks prefer bone, antler, wood, or metal tools. Fleshing is a good last stop for old, worn tools that are too dull for anything else.
One way to scrape a huge hide is to stake it skin-side-up on the ground. Then people can gather all around the edges to scrape it at the same time, which makes a big slow job go considerably faster. You have to remove all the scraps of flesh, fat, membrane, etc. before you can start curing the hide. The quality of this work has a significant impact on the quality of the finished fur or leather.
Bone carving and skull carving are popular crafts. Bones can be cleaned in various ways, but for artistic purposes, dermestid beetles offer many advantages.
