Poem: "The Pattern of Flour and Chicken"

This poem came out of the August 2, 2022 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired and sponsored by Anthony Barrette. It also fills the "shallow" square in my 8-1-22 card for the Reel Time Bingo fest.


"The Pattern of Flour and Chicken"


You don't need a recipe
to make fried chicken.

You just need a chicken and
some sort of fat to fry it in,
flour and a little seasoning
to make a crispy coating.

You put a little salt and pepper
in the flour to start, maybe throw in
some cornflakes or potato chips
for extra crunch, paprika or
crushed red pepper for kick.

You heat the fat in a shallow pan
and lay the chicken in, careful
so it doesn't splash out, flour
and spices swirling around.

You don't know exactly what
the pattern of flour and chicken
is going to be, but you know you're
going to get some good fried chicken.
