"First from Inside of You"

[June 2016]

Dextera had two soulmarks,
both in intimate places and
neither particularly helpful.

Cool tattoos, read the Words
on her left breast, and on the right,
Nice ink, just above the nipples.

So she always said the same thing
whenever anyone complimented her
on her collection of body modifications:
"I'll show you mine if you show me yours."

Talen was the first who solemnly unbuckled
his belt to show her the gilded line of Words
across the very bottom of his belly, just
above the dark thatch of pubic hair.

Dextera didn't hesitate to pull up
her top and show him her breasts.

His eyebrows went up. "It looks like
we're going to have an interesting life."

It was already interesting, what with
two bodymod artists getting together.

They went to skin festivals and
music festivals and hippie events
and boho campouts in the woods.

They were quite popular, too.

In August they met Brandan,
who had their Words printed
along the very tops of his thighs.

Dextera looked at the two phrases
and said, "Are you sure you're into this?
Most guys are willing to get with two girls,
but not comfortable with another guy."

"I'm bisexual," Brandan said with grin.
"I am absolutely, totally into this.
Both of you are gorgeous."

They all were, which
was pretty convenient.

They spent the rest of
the summer getting
to know each other.

They went swimming
and hiking and shopping.

They played music with
Brandan on ocarina, Talen
on pennywhistle, and Dextera
working a pair of bongos.

Each of them had something
new to teach the others, too.

Dextera showed them how
to make jewelry with beads
and thongs of leather or hemp.

Talen did taxidermy and made
crafts from animal bones, so
soon they all sported pieces.

Brandan was into motorcycles
and took them both for rides and
introduced them to his biker friends.

"Don't you ever get, like, jealous?"
one of the biker girls asked them.

"Nope," Brandan said smugly.
"I am secure in my masculinity."

"Security comes first from inside
of you," said Dextera. "If you don't
have that, then you'll never find it
anywhere else. If you do have it, you
don't have to worry about anything else."

"Then, if you are very lucky, you will be
in a position to find other people who
also possess that same sort of security,
and build some kind of family or community
as a team," Talen said, hugging them both.

"You have to feel your feelings, or else
things get mixed up," Dextera said.
"We don't have big problems with
jealousy, because we have
compersion. Little issues are
easy to work out by talking."

"And when they're doing
each other?" the girl persisted.
"How does that make you feel?"

"Wet," said Dextera, and
that was the end of that.

Compersion is sympathetic joy in another person's happiness.

I've heard this rhetoric a lot, and believed it wholeheartedly as a kid. I don't anymore. I've been trying for years to build a strong sense of security, and not gotten terribly far. Certainly depending on other people not having other relationships as a marker of security is ineffective and likely to cause serious problems, but humans are social. Trying to build a sense of security in isolation is like trying to build with dry sand. It's always falling through your fingers.

Ugh this is not perfect but I gotta get back to work.

I think of it like a target symbol, or ripples in a puddle - you start with x, then move out to y.

Varaibles:

- In emergencies, start with family/immediate surroundings, then move out towards the community. (This is codified in CERT policy.)

- With emotional drama, start with your emotions*, then move out to other folk's feelings.

(*I.e. in order: What are your emotions? What unmet needs do they flag? What do you need the other person(s) to do? What is the most effective way to convey your needs to other person(s)?)

- With problems in general, start with ones that you can easily fix, then move on to more complicated ones. (Except those things that must be done - like feeding kids, or evicting household vermin. They get bumped up the priority stack.)

I also like this metaphor because it s simple, easy to remember, and recurring.

...I suppose you could also think of it as a light on a darkened stage -a little flashlight means "watch where you're walking," while all the stage lights means "co-ordinate all the stagecraft."

>>An advantage of experiencing compersion instead of or in addition to jealousy is that you get an addition set of things you can enjoy, watching people you love or like doing fun things together.<<

I suspect this makes for interesting misunderstandings sometimes.

Probably enhances overall relationship skills though. :)

From a storytelling perspective, thusly one can have interesting misunderstandings /and/ demonstrate how to resolve them. (And I have /ideas/, bwahahahaha!)

From a practical standpoint, I find good communication to be about as useful as food, water, or sleep.
