These are the location and content notes for "A Tree's Way Back into the Ground."

"Oak trees come out of acorns, no matter how unlikely that seems. An acorn is just a tree’s way back into the ground. For another try. Another trip through. One life for another."
-- Shirley Ann Grau

A description of the Nicholson family farm appears in "Sacrificed Part of Himself" and its location notes.

A discussion of outdoor toilet facilities and modifications for centaurs first appeared in "Where Your Powers Live."

On a large farm, it is not feasible to run plumbing everywhere, nor to interrupt work on the outskirts to find a toilet. An excellent solution is the use of outhouses and dry urinals. While it is certainly possible to make these permanent installations, it is cheaper to build temporary ones from round or square straw bales. (See how to assemble a urinal from square bales, and various configurations to use.) When the receptacle fills up -- or the work moves to another location -- simply remove the hardware and let the straw rot down to compost. It may also be collected and moved to a central composting location, if the site is accessible for hauling. Another advantage over standard plumbing is that facilities can easily be built in any configuration required. While it is very difficult to modify a standard toilet for nonhuman users, modifying a straw bale outhouse requires nothing more than a discussion of desired features and the ability to lift bales.

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Planting trees is among the more popular ways to celebrate it.

Oaks, classified in the genus Quercus, have an approximated 600 species across the world, 56 of which are native to North America, and 21 of which are native in Missouri.

Comptons Oak

Comptons oak represents numerous seedling strains from Georgia of overcup and live oak. Although it does survive in our zone 5 nursery and plantings, it has not flourished and does die back a bit in a minus 20 F winter however that being said we do have one nice 10 ft. tall tree out of three that we outplanted in the mid 90's. It is a great oak tree with semi evergreen foliage and quite vigorous in sandy soils. The delicious low tannin acorns are quite good and appear to be produced on trees that are only 8-10 ft. tall. This oak is ideal in zones 6 and south and is probably the most evergreen of the oaks for the north. This natural hybrid oak is one of the few hybrid types able to be used for commercial shade tree farms because of its uniformity from seed.

Manna Oak is the first selection of oak that has no detectable trace of tannin or bitterness when eaten fresh off the tree even in the green stage. The green stage of acorn development is the highest point of tannin found in an acorn as it prevents predation. Even squirrels rarely eat green acorns. Manna has none and leaves no trace of astringency or dryness on your tongue. The acorns are not bitter and can be eaten without leaching.
This rare find was created by oak breeder Miguel Marquez as he provided us with acorns of crosses he did using the original "Ashworth" but oak. The tree did self pollinate and produced a viable acorn. That viable acorn we planted at our farm about 25 years ago where now it has been producing for the last decade.
Manna is a good producer of 1 inch sized acorns that cluster near the ends of the branches. . To find an acorn with no discernable bitterness is extemely rare. For this reason, it is worthwhile growing from seed this unique find to create similar seedlings as the parent trees surrounding Manna are also low tannin Ashworth seedlings. Scionwood will be available in the winter of 2022 as this unique find is very rare.

Lint White Oak

Sweet Acorns-Early Production from Seed
Large, productive white oak tree from Kentucky noted for its sweet acorns. Our seedlings are from the second generation of this selection. Seedlings are more branched and productive at an early age. It can take up to 30 years for the average white oak to reach seed bearing age. Lint seedlings produce in 6-10 years.

Red Willow Oak

Pot, 3-6" RWOA_3-6 $9.20 Out of stock
Our farm produced this hybrid many years ago by finding a few good acorns on a lone willow oak in an arboretum in a full zone 5. The result was some of the seedlings showed very good vigor and we kept those and let them grow in the row to maturity. The enlongated leaves with sharp bristles as well as some lobes this oak is a natural hybrid between willow oak and red or black oak. The trees have since produced a lot of acorns but the squirrels love them as well and it is difficult getting enough to produce some trees.
This oak has the characteristic upright symmetrical growth of red oak with the thick dark green leaves of willow oak. Each tree is now combined with our nearby rocket red oak and the seedlings really show this variation. This would be a good landscape oak or used as a timber oak for use in conservation applications in dry climates where few trees can grow. The deep tap root is quite amazing once established.

Rare Shrub Oak -Heavy Early Acorn Production on Three Year Old Plants
Dwarf Chinkapin is an obscure oak found in scattered populations throughout the Midwest and Northeast. It is one of the few oaks that produces runners and is somewhat stoloniferous although after 30 years at our farm, we have not seen this characteristic. It is a precocious fruiting tree and it is not uncommon to see small 3-4 ft. trees loaded with acorns. Trees in our orchard have fruited when 2 ft. tall. Slow growing, but extremely drought tolerant this species has thick leaves with a twiggy growth habit. Our seed trees were produced using wild collected seed from Nebraska found in a wide open windswept area. . Acorns ripen in August and sprout quickly. Especially attractive to turkey, dwarf chinkapin oak is perfect for use in dry soils and open sunny areas.
Dwarf chinkapin oak is easy to transplant young but develops a long taproot as it matures. It also colonizes an area and may become stoloniferous after 20 years or so. The plants will throw their tops and begin sprouting from the base to make a new vigorous and productive tree. We are currently producing a new crop for 2020 which will be ready to go in September. But there is a small crop of 2 year seedlings with very good roots available this fall of 2019.

"Fruitful" Variety Grown from Rooted Cuttings-Heaviest Yielding Plants
Smooth Black Gooseberry-Good Yields-Easy to Cultivate-Clean Foliage
The dark purple berries from this species are one of the best of all gooseberries to eat fresh right off the bush. Ripening in July, the berries have to be very delicately plucked from the thorny branches. Good fresh or processed. The flavor is as good or better than any cultivated gooseberry we have tried.
Missouri is one of the most high yielding gooseberries we have grown. All the plants we have at our farm are self fruitful. This year we have grown a selection from rooted cuttings we have called "Fruitful" which has even more capacity for higher yields. It is a mix of 10 selected plants at our farm that have the highest flowering and fruiting. This selection always has clean foliage free of disease staying green throughout the summer season. Quite vigorous in growth will reach 3 ft. tall. Highly resistant or immune to white pine blister rust.

Learn about tree planting.

Douglas Tallamy, in his book “Bringing Nature Home,” claims that an oak tree supports over 4,000 different species of insects and animals, more than any other tree.

A staggering 2300 species are known to be associated with oak, and that doesn’t include all of the fungi, and any of bacteria and other micro-organisms which use oak!
The 2300 species consist of 38 bird species, 229 bryophytes, 108 fungi, 1178 invertebrates, 716 lichens and 31 mammals. Of these species, 320 are only found on oak and a further 229 species are rarely found on species other than oak. These 549 species are the species identified as being most at risk if oak trees decline due pest, disease and/or climate change.

The single best insect-friendly species to plant in 84% of U.S. counties are white oaks and their relatives. They support some 934 caterpillar (butterfly and moth) species nation-wide. Compare with tuliptree (21 caterpillar species), black gum (26), Sweetgum (35), persimmon (46), and hemlock (92). In the mid-Atlantic states, white oaks host nearly 600 species of Lepidoptera larvae.

Blackberry leaves make good tea. When dried plain, they taste similar to green tea; fermenting makes them a little more like black tea.
