Maybe I'm seeing myself in some of these "flaky" characters, but... I think many of them have ADHD, or are otherwise neurodiverse. Freesia really hits the mark, for example: forgetful, distractible, bouts of obsessive focus and productivity, socially or financially unstable, surrounded by clutter (occasionally with bouts of obsessive cleaning or discarding of it), and so on.
