Willow Glen Waldenkinder School

Elowyn Sterling teaches at the Willow Glen Waldenkinder School. Many of the children in her family, along with their friends, go there if they are old enough.

Waldenkinder is a T-American alternative school that draws some inspiration from Waldorf and Montessori models, Waldenkinder has a naturalistic theme and believes that children learn best from going outside and doing things for themselves. It was founded by a German husband and a Jewish wife who left Germany for America in 1934 and started the first school in 1935. In good weather, most activities take place outdoors. In bad weather, students study in classrooms with natural furnishings and large windows, then make shorter excursions outside. Teachers present some lessons, but a majority of the learning is self-directed.

The Willow Glen Waldenkinder School is nestled in its own greenspace. Different rooms cater to different age ranges, and there are a few specialty rooms too.

The Seed Room is for infants and toddlers, with lots of floor activities.

The Seedling Room covers toddler to kindergarden ages, with low shelves full of toys and projects.

The Sprout Room supports children of elementary age, roughly grades 1-5. It has desks and chairs, a blackboard, and shelves of classroom supplies.

The Sapling Room serves tweens, about junior high range, grades 6-8. It includes tables and chairs, a blackboard, bookcases, and a few tools.

The Tree Room focuses on teenagers, about grades 9-12. It has tables and chairs, a blackboard, and lots of equipment for hands-on activities.

The Library includes reading material for all ages.

The Practical Life Room has tables and chairs at one end and kitchen stations at the other end. Various ages use it, but most are tween to teen age.

The Science Room upstairs has tables and chairs at one end, with lab stations at the other (not visible in this picture). It includes plenty of plants and animals for students to study. Usually the younger students work at the table end and the older ones work at the lab end.

The gym is a big open building with a blackboard on one wall. It also has poster of nature-inspired yoga including Animals, Arctic Animals, Bugs and Insects, Night Animals, Ocean, Spring, Autumn, Calm Down, and Superheroes.

The outdoor classroom has a storage shed with a chalkboard on it, tables and chairs, and other supplies.

The school garden has raised beds where students can grow fruits, vegetables, flowers, and herbs.

The nature playground has pavilions, stepping stumps, a climbing wall, a live playhouse woven of willow, and other attractions.

Placid Pond Retirement Village

Elowyn's parents moved out of the house where she and Ned now live, because they wanted a smaller home with less work. Placid Pond Retirement Village lies in the Fredstrom neighborhood, just north of the Highlands Golf Course. It has several cottage courts for independent living, apartment complexes for assisted living, and a health center for those needing close care. It was her father's last project before he retired, and he took a cottage in Crabapple Court as part of his pay, leaving the old house to Elowyn and Ned.

Placid Pond residents can choose what services they want, although the defaults vary from one place to another. Elowyn's parents have subscribed to general lawn care, snow removal, and weekly maid service so they only have to tend gardens and do everyday housework.

Elowyn's parents have a Tayberry cottage. The second bedroom is done up as a combination craft room and guest bedroom.

The cottage courts are named after the fruit trees planted there. This one is Crabapple Court. It has 5 court clusters plus a row of "solitary" cottages along the top. Small private yards provide space for dooryard gardens. The central court of each cluster is short lawn. The outer edges of Crabapple Court have native trees, bushes, grasses, and wildflowers to attract wildlife. The guest parking lot is in the upper left, and below that the community center, then the common lawn and the plaza for outdoor activities. The grayed-out building in the center is an apartment complex. Wide mixed-use paths encourage walking and biking.

Crabapple trees bloom in spring. Sidewalks encourage activity. Porches face the common courtyard, encouraging people to socialize.

Placid Pond has a variety of amenities including a library, a community garden, and a health center. Hopewell Health Center is on the right. In the background on the left you can see an apartment complex.

South Downtown

Elowyn's younger sister Isadora and her family have a townhouse in the South Downtown neighborhood. Compare with this map showing the location of Downtown Lincoln. Isadora has taken over her mother's string of fine arts businesses including an art supply store, an art gallery, a combination sculpture supply yard with studio rentals, a music store with lesson rooms and a small recording studio, and a cafe with stage for poetry and other performances. Among other things, Isadora introduced the Family Fine Arts Fun Pass, good for various classes, performances, and other family-focused activities.
