These are the setting notes for "The Native Metal of a Man."
Local-Omaha is wasting prime park-facing real estate on a large parking lot at 10th & Douglas NE. Terramagne-Omaha has a Go Outdoors store at that location which sells outdoor equipment such as bicycles, skateboards, and lawn games plus some necessities including athletic clothes, sunscreen, and sport/outdoor first aid kits. The parking lot is reduced somewhat to make space for this at the corner, and it includes plentiful bicycle parking. This is where Zipper and Mrs. Dr. Finn arrive, where Shiv sets up his Coordinator station, and where Lashaunta sets up her Search-and-Rescue station.
The Go Outdoors store has a generous awning over the entrance. A sign encourages various activities.
The camping department offers equipment like tents, sleeping bags, solar showers, lanterns, and portable stoves.
The climbing department carries helmets, shoes, carabiners, ropes, and harnesses.
The cycling department offers a variety of biking clothes, protective gear, bicycles, spare parts, and repair tools.
The running department provides jogging clothes, shoes, water bottles, and other accessories. The walking department offers similar supplies as the running department, just optimized for a slower pace. They also have walking sticks and trekking poles.
The survival department includes a wide range of tools like flashlights and collapsible shovels, and supplies like dehydrated food and water purification tablets.
The first aid department holds a selection of sports kits and wilderness kits as well as separate supplies for restocking.
The toys and games department features a wide range of outdoor entertainment equipment such as squirt guns and frisbees.
The nature crafts department stocks basic craft tools like scissors and punches, supplies like paint and glue, along with natural materials such as feathers, furs, leather, pebbles, and wood. This makes it easy to assemble project kits for family or class trips, especially if you plan to augment them with found items.
Billy Frogg's Grill & Bar
1120 Howard St
Omaha, NE 68102
Old Market, Downtown
The outside of the bar is bright red with a small fenced area for al fresco dining. Inside it's crowded and cluttered, but popular with sensation-seekers.
The bar stocks selections from various local breweries and distilleries around Nebraska.
Emergency preparedness largely began with Civil Defense. In local-America it hasn't developed into a very cohesive system, as much of it fell apart after the Cold War ended. In Terramagne-America they have a thriving system of bunkers useful in all types of emergency, and people generally have a good level of family preparation. Emergency response includes making plans for businesses and events in case of mishap. Terramagne divides emergencies into two broad categories based on response: evacuation vs. shelter.
In T-America, bus stops often have a storm shelter underneath, with a door flat against the ground. This style, popular in cities, has a staircase with a dottie on each side that leads into a large shelter.
Four benches each hold up to 25 people, for a total of 100. The empty spaces underneath the benches customarily hold emergency tools and supplies such as food, water, first aid kits, and rescue equipment. Perishable items typically get cycled out shortly before they expire and donated to homeless shelters, food pantries, or other charities. In this way, the city always has relief materials readily available in case of emergencies.
