Blankets are another option, although it's often hard to find soft ones. Scarves, however, are usually quite soft as people will make them from things like lambswool or cashmere. If you're willing to make alterations, cut and sew, or patchwork then you can probably find wool to use.

Try a thrift store a few weeks after Christmas. People dump gifts that didn't fit or don't suit their tastes. As the weather warms, people also throw out winter clothes during spring cleaning.
