Without paying for Ancestry.com, I've only been able to take my lineage back to the arrival of the Pilgrims and the American Revolution. My Scots ancestor (my great-grandfather, who was alive when I was a small child) came to Nova Scotia either in his mother's womb, or as a very young infant, after the Clearances. (His family's paperwork was lost when a Canadian small-town city hall burnt down.) He eventually wound up in the Boston area, and he courted and married a Lowell "mill girl".
