I've gone into small hardware stores, and more rarely large home-improvement stores, and had an employee ask what I was planning to do then hand me the exact right product off the shelf.

True. I specified occupational therapists because 1) their whole job is finding ways to do everyday things past limitations, and 2) I've seen that their professional literature is particularly good. But any tinkerer is a good bet for making or modifying something that will do a particular task.
