This poetry was written outside the regular prompt calls. It fills the "WILD CARD: New Year" square in my 7-1-20 card for the Winter Fest in July Bingo. It is posted here as a birthday present for Shirley Barrette. This concludes the 2020 haiku book of 500 kigo.
New Year Haiku 12-27-20
New Year -- The Season
shinnen
the new year brings hope
for auspicious beginnings
and an end to grief
* * *
hatsuharu
with the new year comes
the beginning of spring and
a whisper of change
* * *
kozo
last year is done -- gone!
it flies away like the dust
from a beaten rug
* * *
ganjitsu
first day dawns early
and clear, a good omen for
all the days to come
* * *
koshoogatsu
the Little New Year
marks the end of the season
under the full moon
* * *
New Year -- The Heavens
hatsuhi
what can compare with
the first sun of the new year?
nothing can, nothing
* * *
hatsuzora
a breath of fresh air
and clarity of first sky --
everything opens
* * *
hatsunagi
clarity, then storm,
and finally the first calm
after the clouds go
* * *
New Year -- The Earth
hatsufuji
through departing clouds
the first glimpse of Mt. Fuji
fills my heart with awe
* * *
New Year -- Humanity
harugi
sounds in the kitchen --
then I see my daughter in
her spring kimono
* * *
toso
I have always loved
drinking in the New Year with
cups of mulled rice wine
* * *
zooni
at the hearth, my wife
makes the vegetable soup for
a New Year's party
* * *
kadomatsu
that smell! the gate-pines
decorate every entry
with their perfumed air
* * *
shimekazari
old year and old friends,
new year and a new baby --
sacred rope binds all
* * *
hoorai
a long life lived well:
my brother has gone on to
the Isle of the Blessed
* * *
kagamimochi
the mirror rice cakes
on the altar give honor
to the Sun Goddess
* * *
matsu osame
it's time -- take down pine,
in the fire for sweet smoke,
in the field for birds
* * *
hatsuyu
the first bath is warm
against the cold air -- we're like
snow monkeys in springs
* * *
hatsuyume
so many new things
and such possibilities --
first dream of new year
* * *
nenshi
we go visiting,
we receive guests -- this makes for
an auspicious year
* * *
toshidama
the paper so red,
and the children so happy --
ah, New Year's money!
* * *
hatsudayori
the first greeting cards
arrive from family and friends:
little slips of love
* * *
kakizome
my brush dances on
paper, writing good wishes --
first calligraphy
* * *
hatsuichi
how likely is it
first market has what we need?
one way to find out
* * *
hatsuni
all beasts of burden,
like the carts and boats, must face
the new year's first load
* * *
kaizome
home from the market
I come, clutching my treasure:
the year's first purchase
* * *
karuta
the family gathers
for card games and poetry,
an old tradition
* * *
hagoita
in the muddy yard,
battledore and shuttlecock --
the girls are playing
* * *
temari
we play with hand balls,
their colorful string cheerful
as pieces of fruit
* * *
hamayumi
the sacred arrow
from the Shinto shrine points toward
the way to good luck
* * *
manzai
street comedians
make everyone laugh, despite
the chilly weather
* * *
shishimai
down the lanterned streets,
the bright lion comes dancing --
ah, what a marvel!
* * *
New Year -- Observances
wakamizu
young water drawn from
the well on New Year's Day -- its
taste like no other
* * *
nanakusa
seven herbs eaten,
good health in the coming year --
these go together
* * *
wakanatsumi
picking the young greens:
at last, we're out of the house!
the new year is good
* * *
sagichoo
burning ornaments:
the air smells sweetly of smoke
banishing the past
* * *
yabuiri
into the thicket
they go, servants visiting
their childhood homes
* * *
hatsumde
the first visit to
the temple sets the tone of
the whole year to come
* * *
New Year -- Animals
hatsusuzume
outside my window
the first sparrows twittering
wake up the new year
* * *
hatsugarasu
in the frosty fields
the first raven cries, spreading
his shadowy wings
* * *
hatsutori
just before daybreak,
the first rooster is crowing --
go back to sleep, bird!
* * *
New Year -- Plants
shida
see the fiddleheads --
if not eaten, they open
into soft green ferns
* * *
yuzuriha
there in the forest,
the broad-leaved evergreens are
greeting the new year
* * *
hodawara
so many things you
can do with seaweed -- a whole
year to do them in
fukujusoo
pheasant's eye opens
its strong yellow flowers now,
promising long life
* * *
nazuna
today we work work hard
picking shepherd's purse -- tonight,
special rice porridge!
* * *
Notes:
This is long, so the notes appear separately.
