I thought it was weird too, but because I know that oils are chemically hydrophobic, I figured it had a good chance of working. For a nice item, I prefer dedicated waterproofing products, but those are expensive, and thus may not be affordable for a large project. Motor oil is cheap. That's a valuable option if it works, so I wanted to test it. The chair/plant stand was perfect for such a test, because I didn't care about its appearance. The gorgeous amber color was an unexpected bonus. :D
