My teens are Jewish. I'm very much not. I put on a hat and went to both b'nai mitzvot. I was respectful, followed along, said the right things where I knew to and felt comfortable... And everybody was happy and glad to have me there.
Heck, they fly a rainbow flag and a BLM banner and are happy that the UU church is right next door! (And this is the Conservatives; the Reform are even more radical... and I have a couple of Orthodox friends who know what I am and are fine with it...)
_And_, yeah, some synagogues are stuffier than others. Heck, some UU churches are stuffier than others. The one on the Island is a LOT more laid back than the one next to the synagogue.
