"Know What You Stand For"

[Saturday, October 17, 2015]

A line of thunderstorms had
come through Oklahoma
with the autumn rains,
leaving a gigantic mess.

Calliope and Vagary had
gotten good at stormchasing,
but there was only so much
they could do about a line that
raked over the whole state.

So Calliope had put in
a word with SPOON, and
the dispatcher promised
to send extra help as soon
as any became available.

Calliope had thought about
asking Vagary, but after
getting called to deal with
a freaking hurricane because
supervillains overestimated
her capacity, she wasn't
eager to pull that string again.

The two of them were discussing
the best way to cut up a fallen tree
when a teleporter dropped in
with a superhero in tow.

"Hey, Hubbub," said Calliope.
She had worked with him before,
and he was a bit stuck up but
quite good at storm cleanup
and a tough guy besides.
"We're on chainsaws, so
do you want to sweep up
the small stuff for us?"

Hubbub was glaring at Vagary.
"What is he doing here?"

"Intermediate chainsaw,"
Vagary said. "But if you've
got more time in grade,
I can drop down to basic."

Somebody had to cut up
the fallen trees into pieces
small enough to haul away
or sink into the ground.

"No way, I've seen you
out in Eastbord doing
spy shit," Hubbub said.

"Yeah well, today I'm on
chainsaw," Vagary said,
shifting from foot to foot.

"Sure you are," Hubbub said.

"Hubbub, knock it off,"
said Calliope. "We are
here to clean up the mess,
not argue over politics."

"But he's a supervillain,"
Hubbub complained.

"For fuck's sake, he is
a citizen responder!"
Calliope barked. "Quit
bitching and get to work,
because so far he's been
more use than you have."

Hubbub put his hands
on his hips. "Oh, I see,
now you're sticking up for
your boyfriend because --"

"We are just friends,"
Calliope said. "Vagary
is my other half when I
go stormchasing now,
because our powers
magnify each other."

"Ohhh," Hubbub said
with a mocking lilt. "So
that means you're going
over to the other side. I
guess being a superhera
doesn't mean anything
to you now you've got him."

"No, Calliope said coldly.
"You don't get to decide
what means something
to me and what doesn't."

"Hey, if I'm causing trouble,
I can just go," Vagary said.
"The storm's over, so --"

"Stay," said Calliope.
"I can really use your help
with the Phasing part."

"Yeah well, I've seen him
in action and I don't trust him,"
Hubbub said. "Come on,
Calliope, he's a supervillain.
Stop thinking with you --"

"Enough," she snapped.
"I don't have time for this shit.
Just go, Hubbub, you're clearly
not in a mood to help us here."

"Fine, I will," he said. He
touched his vidwatch, and
a teleporter appeared
to carry him away.

Calliope heaved a sigh.
"Well, that sucked," she said.

"You didn't have to do that,"
Vagary said. "I could've left."

"You're helping, he's not,"
Calliope said. "I'd rather
have someone reliable."

"You ... think that I'm
reliable?" Vagary said.

Calliope paused to think
about that, because she had
complained about supervillains
being unreliable in the past,
by which she mostly meant him.

Except Vagary was one of
the constants in her life now.

"It's something I'm learning
about you," Calliope said.

"I'm just surprised that you
stuck up for me," Vagary said.
"You didn't have to do that."

"Yes, I did," Calliope said.
"I didn't become a superhera
so I could stomp on people
when they're trying to help."

"Even supervillains?" he said.
"Usually you stand against us."

"Especially supervillains,"
Calliope said. "If I pick on
you when you're doing right,
that hardly encourages you
to keep doing good things."

"Doesn't stop most people
from doing it," Vagary said.

"Well, it should," Calliope said.
"You have to know what you stand for,
not just what you stand against."

"What do you stand for?" he said.

"Making the world a better place,"
Calliope said. "So let's clean it up."

"I'm sorry that I ran off your help,"
Vagary said, ducking his head.

"You didn't," said Calliope.
"I sent him back for being a dick.
I didn't remember him being
quite so nasty before."

"Things were different
before," Vagary said quietly.

Calliope hadn't noticed that,
but then, she hadn't noticed
a lot of things before meeting him.

Had Hubbub been that obnoxious
when she worked with him in the past,
only she hadn't caught him doing it?

Maybe. Probably. The thought
was an uncomfortable one.

"I don't suppose you could
call us some help from
your side?" Calliope said.

"I can give you a number,"
Vagary said. "It's your call,
though. I could do cleanup
myself, it just takes longer."

"Fine. Give me the number,"
Calliope said, and he did.

The supervillain who answered
was polite and professional, and
five minutes later a teleporter
dropped off two helpers.

The woman was slim with
no obvious superpowers.
The man was bulkier,
probably a strongman.

"I'm Hardway and this is
Firemight," the woman said.
"We're here for storm cleanup."

Then they waited patiently,
all eyes on Calliope.

"Why are you looking at me?"
Calliope said, thoroughly confused.

"You're da boss," said Firemight.
"You're supposed to tell us what to do."

Calliope turned to Vagary. "What?"

"You put in the call," he explained.
"That means you're in charge. You
can treat them like any other volunteers,
only they also have superpowers."

"Okay ..." Calliope shook herself.
"Do either of you have experience
with doing disaster response?"

"Yes, boss," they chorused.

"What kind of jobs do you
usually do?" Calliope said.

They showed her their certs
and described how their powers
could help with this kind of cleanup.

"If I have my pick of projects, I like
working with rough stuff," said Hardway.
"Where I come from, women are meant
to be soft and pretty. That's just not me."

"Yeah, no, fuck that noise," said Calliope.
She wasn't in a mood to humor anyone's
stupid culture stuff today. "There is
a big honey locust down over there
that we haven't dealt with. If you can
break that down, it'd help a lot."

"Sure can," said Hardway --
and suddenly turned to stone,
a gray shell covering her skin.

She reached into the honey locust
without hesitation, and its thorns
slid right off her armored skin.

"I'm impressed," Calliope said.

Vagary was scanning the area.
"Firemight can turn trees to ash,"
he said. "See the brown strip that
cuts across the grass along here?
Someone must have trenched it for
some reason, so it's low on nutrients.
Spread the ash there and it'll help."

"Okay, that's a plan," Calliope said.
"Firemight, drag trees or tree pieces there
and put the ash where it'll do some good."

"Yes, boss," he said, heading for the pile
of branches they had started nearby.

"I'm still not used to supervillains
being more supportive than
superheroes, yet it keeps
happening," Calliope mused.
"They look like good workers."

"Yeah, we have those too,"
said Vagary. "You heard
Hardway, though ... most of us
are here because we just don't
fit into expectations elsewhere."

"Firemight seems more or less
normal," Calliope said.

That was when the strongman
burst into flames and ran his hands
down a long limb, reducing it to ash.

"Or maybe not," she said faintly.

"Yeah. Now you get it," Vagary said.
"Most people freak out at this point.
That gets real old, real fast."

Calliope thought about
the whiny superhero and
the hardworking supervillains.

"I don't know about you," she said,
"but I'd rather just get the job done."

Vagary laughed and slung an arm
around her shoulders. "Yeah, so
would we," he said. "Supervillains
are endlessly practical. Now come on,
let's show those trees who's boss."

Smiling, Calliope let him lead her
toward the waiting windfall.

She might not be sure
where she stood anymore,
but she was still sure
what she stood for.

Notes:

Hubbub (Remington Rolfe) -- He has pale skin, brown eyes, and short black hair. He is originally from Richmond, Virginia but currently lives in New York. Hubbub makes the classic superhero mistake of shortchanging his relationships to run off and do super things, so his personal life sucks. Disaster response includes such skills as crowd control, first aid, water rescue, and storm cleanup. He also does a lot of crimefighting, but his skill there is only average and he focuses on stopping crimes in progress rather than solving them after the fact or hunting down supervillains to prevent future crimes.
Origin: Remington started working as a lifeguard at 16. A few years later, he got caught in a major boating accident while trying to rescue a drunken captain. Remington was surprisingly unscathed, and discovered to have superpowers.
Uniform: On duty, Hubbub wears a blue dexflan shirt, red capery cape, and black capery pants tucked into black krevel boots. Off duty, he wears nice men's clothes.
Qualities: Good (+2) Altruist, Good (+2) Charming, Good (+2) Disaster Response, Good (+2) Quick Thinker, Good (+2) Strength
Poor (-2) Relationships
Powers: Good (+2) Sonic Powers, Good (+2) Tough
Motivation: To save the day.

Hardway (Kate Edger) -- She has fair skin, blue eyes, and long wavy black hair. In stone form, she has gray skin. She is 24 years old in 2015. Where Kate came from, women were meant to be soft and pretty. That just wasn't her, so she acted up, and eventually left. She doesn't trust the authorities to keep her safe, so she does it herself. Now she works for Kraken, where she enjoys taking the rough jobs such as storm cleanup. For fun, Kate enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and rock climbing.
Origin: Someone tried to murder her by throwing her into wet concrete. Instead, she developed superpowers.
Uniform: Most of the time she wears practical women's clothes suited to wilderness or hard work.
Qualities: Good (+2) Intrapersonal Intelligence, Good (+2) Krakenguard, Good (+2) Outdoor Activities, Good (+2) Rough Work, Good (+2) Strength
Poor (-2) Girl Stuff
Powers: Good (+2) Stone Skin
Motivation: To be herself.
The Emotional Wound Thesaurus, "A Physical Assault" p. 64-65

Firemight (Hank Andreev) -- He has fair skin, brown eyes, and short brown hair with a mustache and beard. He has extensive tattoos including a full sleeve on the right extending across his chest and back, with a partial sleeve on the left. Many of the motifs are animal faces, including a lion and a bear on his chest. He is 36 years old in 2015. After a traumatic manifestation, Firemight went to work for Kraken. He appreciates the stability of a long-term job where other people decide what needs to be done and he does it. He often does cleanup and reclamation work because he is strong and can incinerate things with a touch.
Origin: His ratty old apartment building burned down in the middle of the night. He walked out in Fire Form. The firefighters completely freaked and turned a hose on him, nearly killing him in the process. After that, he decided that he'd be safer in the black, so he became a supervillain.
Uniform: Hank wears men's athleisure clothes most of the time. He doesn't bother with anything expensive in case he has to light up and destroy it.
Qualities: Good (+2) Constitution, Good (+2) Followship, Good (+2) Kinesthetic Intelligence, Good (+2) Krakenguard, Good (+2) Thermodynamics
Poor (-2) Not a Self-Starter
Powers: Good (+2) Fire Powers, Average (0) Super-Strength
Vulnerability: He is highly susceptible to water-based attacks.
Motivation: Stability.

Diversity offers a variety of benefits. There are ways to teach diversity and capitalize on it at work.

Nonviolence encourages people to listen to and respect each other. Here are ideas for practicing nonviolence.

Chainsaw safety and use comes in various levels of complexity. Here is a good introduction aimed at forestry workers. Vagary has leveled up to Intermediate This kind of certification makes it easy for an incident commander or other supervisor to sort through a mass of volunteers and put them on suitable assignments.

Safety matters during storm cleanup. While unskilled folks can do the simple tasks, some projects really benefit from expert attention.

Even average storms often bring down a few tree limbs, and bad ones can do much worse. The Beaufort Wind Scale shows a wide range of wind effects. Severe thunderstorms can do a lot of damage. They often spawn tornadoes, which also come in different levels of intensity.

I think a Heinlein character said it.

Lazarus Long, 'Time enough for Love.'

Also Jubal Harshaw in 'Stranger in a Strange Land'. Plus other characters with different variations that I can't find now.

I think that was one of RAH's favourite sayings.

He seemed to believe strongly in strongly believing in something, although not blind-faith belief - he also believed strongly in questioning everything (an approach that came to me naturally).

I used to have a whole collection of Nancy-buttons with Heinlein quotes. That was quite a few changes of address ago, which is why I don't still have them.

Figures that being a super-hero would tend to attract the more self-righteous sort of people... and the black capes tend towards a pragmatic utilitarian frame of mind.

Super-heroes usually tend to be idealistic about whatever gave them their power - someone who got struck by lightning might go into weatherworking. Someone who just manifested an ability they were born with might thank one of the more popular concepts of God. Supervillains are usually more task- or goal-oriented. "I'm super-strong, and a tree fell on somebody's car - I'd better go lift it off and call for a medic, and a tow truck."

It doesn't need to be an either-or split; I know several people in RL who might give thanks to God for skills or good fortune, but immediatly use them to help others.

(I also know some self-righteous religious folks, so YMMV.)
