I figured T-America would be saner than us in that regard. (I have also shared my 'get out of being volunteered' trick with one of the kids, just in case).
Basic bike reapir also saves the families money at a time when they have to pinch pennies, and gives the teens a sense of acommplishment. They are contributing to the family.
Somehow I ended up being the bike repair person. (I am not a mechanic, and while I can do basic diagnostics and easy fixes I can't fix everyting.) I will go over any bikes I donate (Tires hold air? Brakes stop well, but not well enough to fling you over the handlebars? Changing gears is smooth? Cables don't stick? Are there lights? Are there cobwebs everywhere?) I will also weite a note detailing what I couldn't fix, like if it is single gear b/c no cables.
