I suppose I believe we shoud encourage as much diversity as possible in nature, to stack the deck for survival.
For humans, I'd suggest the invest heavily in a few children model - though adoptive families could get quite large, especially if there is a shortage of suitable caregivers or a surplus of 'undesirable' children. (I do live in a culture where children are generally expected to survive to adulthood.)
