Of course, it helps that the same techniques for feral cats work with Shiv:
* Feed him.
* and feed him, and feed him, until he starts viewing you more as a source of item drops than a threat.
* Provide shelter.
* Be calm and quiet.
* Don't mess with the sharp end.
