Self-Awareness Question: Believing Thoughts

Folks have mentioned an interest in questions and conversations that make them think. So I've decided to offer more of those.  This is the current list on self-awareness.

4. Do you believe every thought you think?

LOL no. I have whole universes in here.  I have hordes of characters.  I think it's fascinating to go down a list of philosophies and think about how each one would argue a given dilemma.  I don't have a reality tunnel.  I have a reality tunnel matrix that would put the Mammoth Cave complex to shame.  Yes, people have gotten lost in it.

Many of the ideas I hold are contradictory, I do(n't) believe every one. It's all quantum.

That's the first 6-7 years of my life in most cases: trying to figure out which dimension I'm in. You know how babies test gravity obsessively for a while? I have to do that for everything, because I'm aware that the answers could be anything. I still write occasionally in settings where the questions of science may be the same, but the answers are very different, like the Steamsmith series.

So in that regard, it's less about belief and more about trying to ascertain which things are true here and now. *ponder* I suppose that may contribute to my tendency to view belief as a balance scale with evidence for and against any concept. It's one of the reasons people say I'm not human, but I wouldn't trade it.

Pfft. No, I think too many things and have too much anxiety for that to be even a remotely good idea. Brainchatter + a default mode of 'let's find holes in EVERYTHING!' make for interesting bedfellows, if not altogether comfortable ones.

Now, do I pursue some of the ones I don't believe? Yes, because a) anxiety Be Like That and b) sometimes something fun comes out, or something I can use in story/art/RP/whatever.

Also, I have a bunch of strong-willed characters, all of whom approach systems and situations differently. They do not all agree. Believing all of them would require mental gymnastics even I can't support.

Whenever I see someone say that all of a writer's characters are like the writer, it makes me laugh my head off. Mine aren't even all like each other. While it's true that I write some who are more like me than others, and my favorites are more likely to have something in common with me, the same could be said comparing anyone to any group of people -- there will be some closer matches that are more prone to friending, and some that don't match well.

That's part of what makes your writing so fun. :D

I'm starting to think that maybe whatever processes are involved in making characters work very differently for some people. It's always a tension for me, between what they want to do and what I want them to do. They have their own likes and dislikes, their own agendas and biases. And then I read an article where someone says, essentially, "I don't know, I just put words in their mouth." *shrug*

seriously though, if I believed everything I thought, I'd have been dead ages ago, whether because I thought I could do things that I can't in this universe or because of bad tape wouldn't really matter.
