Here's a video that explains why the sight of the flag flying over Fort McHenry was so important to the American spirit at the time. I grew up not knowing why we were supposed to worship a piece of cloth - no other country seems to venerate their national flag to the same degree the US does.
I've just listened to a few versions of "To Anacreon In Heaven", and as far as I can determine, any decent tenor can get the whole range. As an alto, though, I can't get up high enough. But I like the idea of pulling that on a filk circle - although it would be singularly entertaining to do it at a high school graduation...
