I think that the layered brain damage exaggerated the trends that were already there. The visual-spatial, tactile, and musical intelligences were always going to come out on top. But if he hadn't gotten his head knocked against a wall repeatedly and been mishandled by abusive teachers, Shiv would probably read at average level instead of barely at all.
Fixing the brain damage has raised his potential in some areas, but I doubt that will affect his interest much.
