Sooth. Shiv did enough work in prison, coupled with childhood observation to predict people's actions, that he's getting pretty good at identifying emotions. He doesn't always understand his own, so the outside information helps; but he knows what emotions look like in other people. He just needs to put that stuff together now.

That, and it tells Shiv that someone is paying attention to his feelings instead of ignoring him or pressuring him to hide everything.

I think the trend is drifting slowly upward, as it should, aside from that one hard drop into infancy with Gray. Poor Gray, that incident scared the skittles out of him.
