That response would make evolutionary sense... all whale species passed through an evolutionary stage similar to hippos, and you know how they behave!
Hmm.. I suspect the depth preference of Kraken squid might be more of a social thing, than biological.. it's quieter in the abyssal depths. They and Giant squid do come up to the surface from time to time however... for reasons largely unknown.
