Weird. I wonder if there's a combination of uncanny-valley and stress-release laughter going on? Because the uncanny valley can have weird effects when combined with other emotions. Humans probably wouldn't laugh if that were a human being hurt, but Lucas got away with a person-like object (animals would be out, being physically "cute") and it didn't raise the movie's rating to an R like a torture scene including a living creature would have.
