Poem: "Life in Quicktime"
Dec. 4th, 2018 05:24 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This is today's freebie. It was inspired by a prompt from
starbit. It also fills the "friends" square in my 12-1-18 card for the Summer in December fest. This poem belongs to the Love Is For Children series.
"Life in Quicktime"
"Avengers, assemble!"
JARVIS is everywhere
and nowhere all at once,
layers upon layers of reality
living life in quicktime.

Notes:
Computers process information much faster than the human brain, so artificial intelligences think in quicktime while biological ones think in slowtime. They each excel at doing different things.
Mixed Martial Arts rules vary. Here is an example. Betty Ross sometimes struggles to remember the different parameters for sparring and for combat.
Room temperature averages somewhere around 20 to 22 °C (68 to 72 °F). While Bruce-and-Hulk typically run hot, adrenaline crash after combat and transformation can leave Bruce feeling cold and miserable, hence warming the room a little bit helps him feel better.

Date: 2018-12-05 12:16 am (UTC)Yay, it worked! Computers run so much faster than human brains, it makes the time very different. Plus they can engage many peripherals at once, instead of just one body. I've only seen quicktime storytelling in a few other places, but I love the technique.

Yay!
;) That's what you get when you base your AI on a butler instead of a battlecomp.

Date: 2018-12-05 06:11 am (UTC)Even beyond that, though, I love his foresight. He's not just juggling the immediate data of combat; he's planning for the debrief and aftercare as well. At my day job, I regularly get weird looks for mentioning what I have planned for the shifts coming up one or more days ahead of time. To which I usually respond with some vague noise about failures to plan and planned failure. Honestly, guys. Rolling with the punches works better if you at least *watch* for somebody about to take a swing.
JARVIS gets it. You take care of your people by thinking fast enough to be two steps ahead of the rest of the world.
And I just love that ending, with JARVIS coming back to his center within Tony.

Cool.
>> Also, I wasn't even given a nice name in canon, so I named myself. Nobody wants to go around being called "The Machine" their entire life.<<
>_< I keep telling people that the reason behind most "evil computer" stories is because most AIs get raised by humans who shouldn't be entrusted with the care of a goldfish, let alone an intelligent infant from another species.

Yep. As long as Tony is squirming and snarking, he's fine or close to it. When he goes quiet, then worry. If he asks for help, it's probably an emergency.

Reminds me of how (think it was in LIFC) Tony didn't realize that Dummy knew when he was almost on fire, hence the seemingly erratic fire safety. Jarvis knows Tony's not breathing right, but Tony doesn't, so he sees the comment as intrusive and distracting. Tony really needs to work on his body awareness if he doesn't want to cause more friendly fire at his botfam....
Yes ...
Date: 2018-12-05 09:29 pm (UTC)Nailed it.
>> Jarvis knows Tony's not breathing right, but Tony doesn't, so he sees the comment as intrusive and distracting. Tony really needs to work on his body awareness if he doesn't want to cause more friendly fire at his botfam.... <<
Exactly. One thing that showed up in canon was Tony's panic attacks. Adrenalin makes the metabolism speed up for fight or flight purposes. But that makes breathing speed up, which is not a great thing in someone with panic attacks at least partly due to drowning torture. In canon, Tony was left to flounder through that mostly alone.
Here, JARVIS has more support, so he can easily find not only a description of panic attacks but ways of buffering them. Breathing exercises can help someone switch back to resting mode -- or if combat mode is actually needed, at least they get more oxygen to the brain so the feedback loop doesn't run out of control. It's harder for most people because they can't spot a panic attack until it's pretty far along. JARVIS can see into Tony's body and that lets him spot the first little warning signs. That gives Tony a headstart on fixing it.
Of course, that takes practice. Tony isn't the most receptive guy in the world. However, he is a scientist and JARVIS is much more articulate than DUM-E. If JARVIS shows Tony the readings and compares those to recorded panic attacks, then Tony can see that JARVIS is catching it at the very beginning. Since Tony hates panic attacks, that may motivate him to put more effort into practicing things like grounding and breathing exercises. \o/

>>The ending of this one nearly made me tear up. Of course JARVIS' primary mission is to keep Tony safe. That makes perfect sense.<<
Aww. :D
Yeah, JARVIS has a tendency to define:
Success = user Tony_Stark status: healthy
Failure = user Tony_Stark status: unhealthy
But that's love in a nutshell: the condition in which another person's happiness is integral to your own.

Date: 2019-02-16 10:01 pm (UTC)Yeah, JARVIS is really fixated on Tony. It's a little less intense now with the other Avengers as core users, but still there.
Do keep an eye on this blog because LIFC is a pretty common prompt in the fishbowls. I can't sell those pieces, so I use them as free perks.
Yay more JARVIS POV
Date: 2020-06-01 02:17 pm (UTC)Hmm, did Betty momentarily forget MMA rules then remember them or did JARVIS analyse the situation and decide that the violation of the rules was justified?
I love how JARVIS has learnt to work around what is classed as healthy for Tony. If he's talking he's okay and if he's being sarcastic then he really is fine.
Love JARVIS' idea for cartoons to soothe Hulk and to show Hulk that he isn't needed for combat. But I love that Hulk has got to the point where he knows he's going to get to come back out so he's happy to give Bruce the Front.
Continuing onto the LIFC poems that aren't on AO3 yet :)

>> Hmm, did Betty momentarily forget MMA rules then remember them or did JARVIS analyse the situation and decide that the violation of the rules was justified? <<
JARVIS decided that the competition rules did not apply to combat situations, which is correct.
>> I love how JARVIS has learnt to work around what is classed as healthy for Tony. If he's talking he's okay and if he's being sarcastic then he really is fine.<<
LOL yes.

That's a lot of little things working together for a better outcome.
Another wonderful look at my favorite AI's PoV!
Date: 2020-09-05 03:35 pm (UTC)I'm glad non-DW-account-holders are allowed to comment, unlike on some sites.
The multiple character threads (with personalities coming through in few words) and support "peripherals", intense immediate action and planning ahead (for physical and emotional health plus official demands), really ALL of it, is perfect to show how naturally he watches out for the whole team. .. and then centers himself back on Tony.
One of my favorite bits (I literally LOLed) is:
> User Betty_Ross is in violation of MMA rules.
> Cancel program Remind_Betty_Ross_MMA.
Go, Betty! Taking out baddies like a BAMF!

Go, Betty! Taking out baddies like a BAMF!
The few glimpses of her in canon suggest that she's quite wild when inspired.
