It takes the natural inclination to explore and provides just enough structure for safety's sake. At least, it cuts down on the number of kids who eat bugs or pebbles. It's also an opportunity to introduce foraging: "No, that leaf is not for eating; it is grass. You may eat this mint leaf instead."

Bummer.

I learned about my allergies by getting into things, and deciding which things to avoid or at least be careful with. I can sit on hay but prefer not to have hay fights. I'm more assertive about keeping
most artificial colors, fragrances, etc. off my skin.

Scouting was a mixed bag and eventually crashed and burned over my refusal to tolerate abuse. But it was a very early, very vivid example of my resistance to social pressure and hypocrisy from children or adults.
