This poem is spillover from the November 6, 2018 Poetry Fishbowl. It was inspired by a prompt from
siliconshaman. It also fills the "reputation" square in my 11-5-18 card for the Family Ties Bingo fest. This poem has been sponsored by
fuzzyred. It belongs to the Shiv thread of the Polychrome Heroics series. It follows "Unless You Let Us Know You're Down There," so read that first or this will make no sense.
Warning: This poem contains intense and controversial topics. Highlight to read the warnings, some of which are spoilers. It features the aftermath of sexual assault from the perspective a support person, hostile language, worry, vulgar language, reference to boundary violations leading to violent behavior, trust issues, ulterior justice systems, holiday stress, family issues, and other angst. If these are sensitive issues for you, please consider your tastes and headspace before reading onward.
"A Corresponding Clarity of Purpose"
[Night of Monday, December 22, 2014]
Tolli waited until
the house door
and the barn door
had both closed.
He stalked around
the corner of the garage
so that sound wouldn't carry.
Then he made the call.
"Hello, Blues Moon --"
"I need to talk to Boss White,
right now," Tolli said.
"I'm sorry, he's with --"
"Dymin. You do not want
to fuck with me tonight. I don't
care what he's doing, tell him
to get his ass on this phone,"
Tolli said through his teeth.
"Is Shiv with you?" she said
in a much smaller voice. "I don't
know what's going on, but Boss White
lit out of here like his tail was on fire,
and it has something to do with
our boy, and I'm worried."
"He's here," Tolli admitted.
"Shiv asked me to handle this
for him. You can imagine
how much that worries me."
Shiv never asked for anything.
He must be bleeding-out desperate.
"Yes," said Dymin. "I'll put you
through on the emergency line,
but I can't promise you that
Boss White will answer."
"Understood," Tolli said.
"Sorry I snapped at you,
Dymin. This isn't your mess."
"Forgiven," she said. "I'm
ringing you through now."
Tolli marched back and forth
as he listened to the phone ring,
every unanswered buzz winding
his nerves tighter and tighter.
"Hello --"
"What in the name of God
is going on over there?"
Tolli barked at him.
"Is Shiv with you?"
Boss White asked,
voice careful and even.
"Yes, he's here," Tolli said.
"He called me and asked if he
could hide out with us for a bit.
I sent a teleporter. He asked
me for one who didn't need
to make physical contact."
"Fuck," Boss White said crisply.
"That's what I said, as soon as
he couldn't hear me," Tolli said.
"Then when Shiv got here, he didn't
want to talk about whatever happened.
He told me just enough that now I'm
tempted to come to Omaha and kick
Chyou's ass up between her ears."
"How much do you know?"
Boss White said. "Boy didn't
give me many details. Out loud."
Tolli remembered that Boss White
was a telepath. That could be ... useful.
"You planning to dig up your own details?"
Tolli wondered. "Or you need help with that?"
Boss White sighed. "I picked up enough already,
just from the ambient, to know that I'm not
going to enjoy that little excursion."
"I'm sorry," Tolli said. "I don't
envy you that responsibility."
"Shiv is mine, and I'll stand up
for him," Boss White said. "I try
not to pry, but I'm thinking this time
things got more than a little out of hand."
"Definitely," Tolli said. "Chyou made
a pass at him, and wouldn't take no for
an answer. So Shiv said no at knifepoint.
Which he did not need another person
reinforcing is the only way that works!
I don't think he cut her, but still."
Boss White swore, long and low.
"No, I don't think he did either, or
somebody would've noticed," he said.
"I've been shaking down the family, but
most of them don't know a thing about it.
Her mother's not here at the moment,
and Chyou already split -- probably
as soon as Shiv got rid of her."
"I can't say I'm surprised," Tolli said.
"What she did was actionable. It could
make quite a blow to your reputation. I
thought you ran a family establishment --
I've been letting my civilian brother and
his kids spend all hours at your club --"
"I know," Boss White said heavily.
"It shouldn'ta happened, and it did.
I'll do my best to figure out what
went wrong and how to fix it."
"Well, you can start by teaching
that Chyou to keep her hands
to herself," Tolli said hotly.
"That's up to Shiv," said Boss White.
"No, it's up to us, because he doesn't
want to deal with it himself, and he
shouldn't have to," said Toll.
"All right, you got a point there,"
Boss White said. "We'll handle it."
"Does she have any way of
stalking him here?" Tolli asked.
"We'll be on guard, just in case,
but it would be nice to know that."
"Not that I know of," Boss White said.
"Her family did say that they came
to Omaha in her own company jet."
"Shit," said Tolli. "How much
money are we talking here?"
"They're rich," Boss White said.
"We're not poor," Tolli pointed out.
"I just want to gauge the threat level."
"Luci told me that her sister could
buy the city, while their father or uncles
could buy the whole state," Boss White said.
"That's more than enough to buy a judge,"
Tolli said grimly. "We may have a problem."
"You and I both know that Shiv ain't gonna
file charges," Boss White said. "He don't
trust the cops, and I can't blame him."
"He barely trusts anyone," Tolli said.
"That just means he has to rely on us
to deliver some justice for once."
"That we will," Boss White said, and
Tolli could hear the teeth in his voice.
That Chyou was about to get hers.
"Shiv needs people to stand up
for him, to put him first, to act
like he matters," Tolli said.
"Sounds like you appointed
yourself," Boss White said.
"I think all of us have had
little glimpses of that power,
often when we're actively loving
someone and feel that eradication of
self that comes of feeling protective,"
Tolli said. "I associate that feeling with
a corresponding clarity of purpose
and a disappearance of confusion."
"True enough," Boss White said.
"So when does Shiv need to come
back to work?" Tolli asked him.
"He doesn't," Boss White said.
"I told him that he's off duty until
further notice, and I'd talk to him
tomorrow. I need to make sure
he's back in working order before
I put him on the floor, and holidays
are hard on that boy anyhow."
"We noticed," Tolli said. "It took
some negotiation to work out
how much family festivity he
could tolerate from us."
"If it's more than zero, then
you're ahead of the game,"
Boss White said. "He's been
tetchy about that all along."
"He's getting better, though,
he really is," Tolli said, his words
half statement and half prayer.
"That's so," Boss White agreed.
"We'll back him up as best we can.
I'll keep digging on this end, and
you make sure he's safe on yours."
"Can do," Tolli said in a steely tone.
Then he softened enough to add,
"I'm sorry I took it out on you.
I snapped at Dymin too."
"We're all on edge tonight,"
Boss White said. "I done
bit Janeel's head off just
for walkin' too slow."
"We need to get a lid on
this shit before it spills over
on Shiv," said Tolli.
"Well, that's what
a heavy bag is for,"
Boss White said.
Tolli thought about
the home gym downstairs
and the gun that he kept
ready for target practice ...
or more serious duty.
"Yeah, I better put in
a little extra too," he said.
"That's a plan," Boss White said.
"All right, I need to get back on
hunting down Chyou. You go
take care of our boy, eh?"
"I will," Tolli promised,
and put his phone away.
Despite tonight's trouble,
he still admired Boss White.
The man had been among
the first people to see something
in Shiv, and that counted for a lot.
That, more than anything else, gave
them a corresponding clarity of purpose.
Whistling softly, Tolli headed for the house
to see what he could do to help Shiv
find some semblance of safety.

Asking for help can be confusing. This post about an autistic child explains the process of asking for help, with a flow chart, and includes a list of very practical reasons why people often resist asking for help. Shiv has difficulty asking for help, due to ineffective or harmful results from trying that in his past, but he's desperate enough to reach out this time. Follow the steps to ask for help.
Protection is a quality associated with manhood, but not limited to that. In the immediate aftermath of trauma, survivors need protection from further harm. Because they may still feel unsafe, the next task is to establish a sense of safety.
Difficult conversations come up in everyone's life, so it's essential to know how to communicate on touchy topics. Troublesome feelings can lead to hostile language. It may help to consider the levels and follow a checklist. These skills help in negotiation, mediation, at home, and at work. Tolli, Dymin, and Boss White all have pretty good communication skills, but the current stress is right around their coping threshold, so they waver back and forth.

Impressions
Date: 2018-11-21 05:16 am (UTC)It's exceedingly satisfying to see people defending Shiv, however. The apology to Dymin makes me smile because it shows that Tolli is putting his anger where it belongs.
Re: Impressions
Date: 2018-11-21 05:48 am (UTC)She's not hard to find. They know her name. That's plenty. Chyou's best hope is that she's offered a deal that will make everyone else think she's been punished enough. Which is the point of these under-the-table negotiations, to avoid her getting pounced a dozen times by Shiv's friends and family.
Notably, I expect Shiv and/or Tolli will ask Dr. G what sort of things would reduce the chance of Chyou making the same mistake again; and how to talk with the staff at Blues Moon so they know how to handle such threats, how to support a coworker who was harassed, and where to get support for themselves if they're freaked out by the incident.
>> It's exceedingly satisfying to see people defending Shiv, however. <<
Yay! He needs more of that in his life. But he's going to be utterly baffled by everyone forming a wall around him. It's unfamiliar, and uneasy.
>> The apology to Dymin makes me smile because it shows that Tolli is putting his anger where it belongs. <<
Yeah, both Tolli and Boss White are so pissed with Chyou that it's spilling over onto other people. However, they're also both steady enough that when they start drifting back toward calm, they apologize for snapping at someone else. Being polite isn't about never losing your temper. It's about how you handle it when you do.
Re: Impressions
Date: 2018-11-21 05:55 am (UTC)Which, yeah, that collection of information is worth more than the diamonds on Chiyou's shoes.
Re: Impressions
Date: 2018-11-21 06:32 am (UTC)I would love to see that. We know that Boss White has been grooming Shiv, casually from the start and more deliberately now, to take on more responsibility. For a while now, I've had in mind a scene where it is Shiv's first night in charge of security on the main floor, with Tolli and Simon there to help him because they already know the gig.
>> while Doctor G works with a group of staff about support and Boss Finn talks with another group about self-care after an incident. What's the range of reactions, how to tell if a problem is fading, and so on. <<
That would be awesome. One thing I know Boss White does is give a little pitch about how the offerings are not mandatory, because forcing anyone to listen to sex talk is harassment, but they are encouraged and will be rewarded with job-related perks. Any of the sessions actually held at Blues Moon are during hours when staff are working but it's not open to the public, so they're getting paid. Anyone who passes a class that earns credentials will get that added to their resume, and if it meets certain parameters, they get a raise and/or qualify for more responsibility. T-America likes mix-and-match credentials so people can customize their skills according to their interests. I wouldn't be surprised if Blues Moon winds up with one or two folks actually trained in the basics of survivor support. I'm sure Luci would jump on it.
Beyond that, he'll have someone from the Omaha Personal Repair Center drop by and do a pitch for their services. If anyone needs time off for that, he'll make it happen.
After all, Boss White wants this to be a family establishment, and he knows the numbers. Even though T-America does better than here, in the worse neighborhood their numbers are probably close to ours. 1 in 4 women plus 1 in 6 men equals a lot of sexual assault survivors when you count up the number of staff, let alone the rest of the gang. This is a good opportunity to reach out to them when they won't feel singled out by the attention to the topic.
Shiv, of course, will freak right the fuck out. He's already going to be pissed that Luci spilled some of his beans, and now everyone at work knows a bunch of shit from his past that he doesn't want people to know and doesn't want to deal with. Plus everyone will be talking about sexual safety for a month or more, which is a touchy topic at the best of times and this is the worst time. Not fun.
Feel free to prompt for any of this. If you want to pick up the stuff largely featuring the Finns, that would be great.
>> Which, yeah, that collection of information is worth more than the diamonds on Chiyou's shoes.<<
Agreed.
I figure if we can show how good followup looks, then maybe that will inspire people to do it when they see a coworker get harassed.

Date: 2018-11-21 06:32 am (UTC)I don't know. That might just get through her thick skull that her money can't shield her from everything. And seeing it happen over and over might get through to Shiv in a way that very little else would, even as it bewildered and confused him why anyone would make such a big deal over something that was done to him, let alone why everyone would.
Re: Impressions
Date: 2018-11-21 07:05 am (UTC)Oh, money isn't going to shield her from this mess. Not a bit of it.
Well, the Quiwil family might be allowed to pay for the outside services needed to clean up the mess, like a visit from the Omaha Personal Repair Center, but it's not getting Chyou off the hook.
>> And seeing it happen over and over might get through to Shiv in a way that very little else would, even as it bewildered and confused him why anyone would make such a big deal over something that was done to him, let alone why everyone would.<<
You will see a bit of this, because it does take time to make a deal and put the word out. Beyond that point, if other people keep picking on Chyou, there's no point making a deal.
That's the difference between organized and disorganized crime. The point of tolerating someone like Boss White is to keep a lid on it. There's a certain amount of crime, but it's not excessive. Shiv knows exactly how much it sucks when society treats you like nothing will ever be paid enough. 0_o So, there's a deal in the making, and Chyou will not like it at all, but it will be better than having supervillains pouncing on her for months. And that application of ulterior justice will show Shiv that this is not to be taken lightly.

>> People just see him do the telempathic with Shiv, one of his gang that he likes and cares about. But he's a supervillian, and can rearrange someone's head if they're not careful. <<
Boss White could but he won't. The vast majority of Terramagne telepaths, including the supervillains, are mentally fastidious. They don't want to invade other people's minds, let alone meddle where they're not wanted. So the most he would do is frisk her for information regarding what exactly she did to Shiv and any other victims, and even that is costly enough he'd rather find another way.
But there are other supervillains who may want a piece of Chyou for what she did.
>> He is motivated to make her safe to be around Shiv, and she's Luci's sister. <<
Oh, he'll find ways of that, never doubt it. Boss White is not going to let a sexual predator run around causing more problems.
>> Show her her own black mirror in all its darkest detail. She won't enjoy it, but she needs it. <<
She'll have to get a psychiatrist for that. It is likely to be suggested.

Date: 2018-11-21 06:29 am (UTC)Asking someone to help with X with the understanding that you don't need to do it "right now" but it does need to get done.
Getting a "yes, I'll help"
Then they never get back to you.
This is a problem because the only way to "deal" with it amounts to "nagging" them and that is pretty much guaranteed to make them less likely to help then (or in the future)
(can you tell I've been burned this way a number of times?)
Yes ...
Date: 2018-11-21 10:33 am (UTC)I have therefore found that, if I want to get something done, I have to do it myself. I prefer to do it myself, because asking for help that is promised but doesn't arrive just screws things up and makes it harder to get done -- and the probability of that happening is consistently higher than that of it getting done promptly. And I can't keep heaping everything on my very limited supply of reliable folks, I need them for critical things I can't do.
Another dissuasive factor for me is that, if I mention a problem, a lot of people feel entitled to do whatever they please to me and don't feel compelled to take "no" for an answer. No help is greatly preferable to boundary violations. This is a huge factor in Shiv's reluctance.
An irreducible factor is that I'm simply smarter than almost everyone else, to the point that my worst skills often exceed other people's best skills. (You've seen how bad I am at math? Somehow, 66% of people are worse, according to my test scores.) It's hard to see any point in asking for help when other people are routinely less able to solve problems than I am. You can see a glimmer of this in Shiv with his repetition of "Why can't I just do this the easy way?" when that way is either something nobody's thought of, or they can't do because it requires superpowers.

So I was really stuck. And I probably go too far into the "don't nag" bit, but with my history, even *potentially* offending someone I will have to deal with in the future is scary as heck.

Date: 2018-11-22 02:22 am (UTC)Yeah, that's a challenge. It's one reason I like tribal thinking. We have a big vehicle, so we help friends who need to haul stuff.

That's a snag. There are some driving / delivery / transport services available, but they're more expensive than renting the vehicle alone. I've also heard of volunteer ones, though, and some areas have an hour exchange where you can swap something for a ride.

I don't blame you.
In my observation, nagging almost never works and has a high chance of the person either throwing a tantrum or dumping me. I automatically consider those credible threats for dealing with anyone outside the family. Reliable people don't need to be nagged.
Unreliable people resent being reminded that they are not reliable. So usually, either I do it myself or it doesn't get done. It's not like nagging is likely to make a difference. Which sucks.
