Poetry Fishbowl Open!
Nov. 6th, 2018 01:08 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
The Poetry Fishbowl is now CLOSED. Thank your for your time and attention. Please keep an eye on this post as I am still writing.
Starting now, the Poetry Fishbowl is open! Today's theme is "family of choice." I will be checking this page periodically throughout the day. When people make suggestions, I'll pick some and weave them together into a poem ... and then another ... and so on. I'm hoping to get a lot of ideas and a lot of poems.
Some of my series play into this. Clay of Life features Menachem the blacksmith and Yossele the golem traveling together. Frankenstein's Family is unconventional. The Moon Door is about a chronic pain support group (and werewolf pack). One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis focuses on substance abuse and developing a new religion. Path of the Paladins includes a variety of chosen kin such as Shahana & Ari, Johan & Althey. Polychrome Heroics has many found-families including Antimatter & Stalwart Stan, Aquariana and the whales, Cassandra and Groundhog, Danso and Family, Dr. Infanta and her Guardians, the Iron Horses, Officer Pink and Turq, Pain's Gray and his gang, Shiv and all his people (shh, don't say the F-word). Schrodinger's Heroes and the Blueshift Troupers both feature teamfamilies. Beyond that, this is a good time to request sequels about any established found-families you wish to follow further.

What Is a Poetry Fishbowl?
Writing is usually considered a solitary pursuit. One exception to this is a fascinating exercise called a "fishbowl." This has various forms, but all of them basically involve some kind of writing in public, usually with interaction between author and audience. A famous example is Harlan Ellison's series of "stories under glass" in which he sits in a bookstore window and writes a new story based on an idea that someone gives him. Writing classes sometimes include a version where students watch each other write, often with students calling out suggestions which are chalked up on the blackboard for those writing to use as inspiration.
In this online version of a Poetry Fishbowl, I begin by setting a theme; today's theme is "family of choice." I invite people to suggest characters, settings, and other things relating to that theme. Then I use those prompts as inspiration for writing poems.
Cyberfunded Creativity
I'm practicing cyberfunded creativity. If you enjoy what I'm doing and want to see more of it, please feed the Bard. The following options are currently available:
1) Sponsor the Fishbowl -- Here is a PayPal button for donations. There is no specific requirement, but $1 is the minimum recommended size for PayPal transactions since they take a cut from every one. You can also donate via check or money order sent by postal mail. If you make a donation and tell me about it, I promise to use one of your prompts. Anonymous donations are perfectly welcome, just won't get that perk. General donations will be tallied, and at the end of the fishbowl I’ll post a list of eligible poems based on the total funding; then the audience can vote on which they want to see posted.

Queer community. (Trans is part of queer here.)
A cultural rite of passage to adulthood in which one chooses a family member—and it is understood that this person is not typically a relation or [would-be] lover—to bestow upon one the adult name and gender one has chosen. (This goes for cis as well as trans folks. And there are probably a bunch more than two standard adult genders.)
Intentional solarpunk/lunarpunk community.

Two votes today
Date: 2018-11-06 10:41 pm (UTC)Another in the Fishbowl: I would venture that "Adam's playmates" would serve as a nucleating condition for a family of choice. Doesn't he have something going on with the werewolves? Also, as far as human playmates go, I could totally see Victor and Igor inviting a playmate's family to dinner at the castle, for the purpose of letting that family know that, should they feel like reciprocating, that they would gladly accept and strongly prefer nothing special. I've seen a good number of extended families of choice that evolved in a similar fashion.
Does Astin/Palmer/V count as a family of choice? I get the impression that none of them would really get along if they tried to live with one another, but I also think that they would all be welcome in each other's quarters, even in the areas that might normally be thought of as private. That counts by me. Anyone else in the Lacuna who might become part of that family?

Date: 2018-11-06 11:43 pm (UTC)Cousins on my husband's side are generally good people, but really aren't hearing any concerns for my underage AAA Jewish teen, SlytherClaw Teen, under this administration.
Show ONE way of Underground Railroad, run, or FIGHT, for the horrible choices that might be ahead. Give me more on Leor in An Army of One, or Antimatter in Polychrome Heroics, or Adam and his playmates in Frankenstein's Family, or SOMEONE SEEMINGLY LOVED as long as they STOP saying that they are different. </3 My heart is breaking over my teen trying not to care. I have told them the stories of our relatives on the refugee ships who died being sent BACK to Germany, after being refused entry to the United States of America. I never mentioned our lesbian Jew cousin in the Nazi breeding houses, dying in childbirth. Nice people will still watch as we are taken away, as long as nobody has an abortion or takes away their guns. I'm watching the Wonder Woman movie tonight. Technoshaman has the voting in 2018 meme that I'm referencing with my icon today.

Hmm. What about found family working through dealing w clashing expectations/traditions? For ex, shoes in the house. No shoes. Slippers. Dinner at table, vs in front of tv.
When do friends become family - I love seeing the start of it, when people are just starting to cross that line, start realizing these people are important/permanent.
Balancing biological family and found. Does one simply get incorporated in the other? How would biological family react to their XYZ suddenly having strangers that need to be assimilated or not, but are suddenly important to that person. Does it cause jealousy, incomprehension, or happy welcome?
Pain's Grey meets Luci? Found family bound by Shiv meet each other. Cause Shiv has a large family, he just doesn't realize it yet.
Can I just make Emotional Intimacy a prompt? Getting to know each other, seeing sides usually hidden because it's safe to show them. Pain's Grey and Shiv might work for this one.
Hope some of these are what you are looking for!

*Terramagne: Abrihet Senai has a family in Eritrea. She also has a family in Italy. Neither one diminishes the other, in any way. Again, bonus points for marginalized folks of all sorts, soup and nary; queerfolk refugees from the C.A.R., Tanzania, Malawi, Nigeria, other Eritreans and Ethiopian minority ethnic groups, Italian Romany, people who've circled half the globe escaping the Asian subcontinent... anyone, really.
