Going through intense psychological trauma to end at the same point you'd be at before you started is hardly everyone's cup of tea. I find it a more uplighting path through, but probably a less realistic one.
Love is an interesting force. I heard a story of a woman who was married as a young girl to a husband who deeply loved her, but didn't want her to make her own choices. He loved that she could help him edit his newspaper articles for grammar, but wouldn't let her write her own article, or finish high school. He thought she looked best in red, so made her wear it constantly. Her granddaughter was telling her story. She said her grandmother said she wanted desperately to leave for years, but she would look at her husband and love him too much to go through with it. It wasn't about rape, or manipulation through sex. The love she felt was very real. I find her grandmother's story haunting.
Human brains are plastic. We can get used to almost anything. We can find a way to thrive in almost any situation.
