It's a semi-social activity that Shiv enjoys, it gets him outdoors, and it involves food. Foraging helps him feel calm and secure, because it gives him more control over his food supply. That makes it an excellent coping skill for him.

I have tried to lay out a timeline of very gradual improvement. Notice that Halley is skittish of Shiv, trying to stay away and not annoy him -- but will approach and offer input on any practical matter where thon can see a way to help. That's actually a clever and effective approach.
