There is some debate as to when cats were domesticated. It seems to have happened at least three times, and the modern feline is the result of a hybrid of all three. But the earliest event we have definite evidence for either pre-dates, or happened at the same time as dogs were domesticated, roughly 15,000 years ago +/- 3,000 years. [there is some disputed evidence for an earlier third domestication event of cats, ~80,000 years ago.]
It is worth noting however, that without cats, one cannot successfully store grain, and without agriculture and grain stores, wide-scale civilisation is not possible. Ergo, domestication of cats must have been a pre-cursor to settled civilisation.
It's an excellent poem, and encapsulates what happened nicely.
