The way I handle it is this: Does treating them as X make interactions smoother and/or provide actionable insights? If so, do it. If not, look for a better model.
I had one friend who was so much a wolf, the only reason he passed as a primate is because people expected it. His social dynamics were all pack, not troop. Fine, I'm fluent in wolf, we got along great.
