It's like the old pilots joke.. it's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom. Emphasis on sudden.

All systems can absorb or shed energy at a certain rate, more than that and they break. The trick then is to transfer the kinetic energy at a safe rate. Rolling as per sae, isn't any worse than skidding, but it has the added component of rotational energy making limbs flail against hard surfaces, ie numerous small impacts, leading to broken limbs. Which is why stuntmen/women tuck their arms in, and try to keep their legs in line with their bodies when rolling, and roll so the axis of rotation is along the body, reducing centripetal force. Which is darn near impossible to do if you're not expecting it. Hence, skidding works better.
