I expect it breaks down to "pole (for purpose)" but I was also looking at the near-identical construction. I figure that either someone kept grabbing the clan pole as a convenient spark-swatter ("Aaaaa! Stop doing that! It's disrespectful. Use this instead.") or the swatter was in front of the wigwam so much that people started to attach other meanings, but decorating a swatter isn't a great idea, so they made a separate clan pole.
