Re: refusing dances... Sort of yes-and-no, in my experience. There tends to be a pervading sense that it's perfectly fine to tell someone you're sitting out this dance, but rude to refuse someone's invitation and then go dance with someone else. I've gotten pretty good at reminding myself that declining to dance with people who hurt my wrists or make me uncomfortable shouldn't - doesn't - mean I don't get to dance at all, but... The background is there, even if my cohort/generation has started pushing back against it some.
