Totally agree on the need for fault tolerance, and the decline in the quality of goods - overall, not just American. Replacement sounds like the right course; I hope you'll be able to implement it *soon*!

Sounds like it's had intermittent problems for its entire "service life". Any chance there are relevant lemon laws that could be applied here?
