A couple of years ago I stumbled across two National Geographic books of photographs - one portraits, the other photography in general. They were ridiculously cheap in a discount bookstore - so naturally I had to have them. They're great to browse through, looking at composition and colour, etc. I think my favourite photography book is Michel Frizot's A New History of Photography, a huge tome I found in the same bargain bookshop. It's great for seeing how photography went from Nicephore Niepce's original vague shot from a bedroom window, right through daguerrotypes, tintypes, etc and into the modern world.
