I find it relaxing to shop for characters and decorate their spaces. It lets me think about how things go together, from the perspective of many different tastes.
For example, I just researched an RV for people to have sex in. It's not decorated like a bordello. It's decorated like a cozy vacation home. This feels less sleazy and gives plausible deniability. "Officer, does this look like a whorehouse on wheels to you?" "Um ... no."
