Today we de-sticked the savannah.   About half of it has been mowed once and is now ankle-deep.  We found a baby rabbit scampering around.

Then another, and another, and another.

Well, they're in different places so they've left the nest.  Maybe I can pick them up and move them to the prairie garden where they'll be safer.

Then I almost stepped on a bird nest.  It's probably killdeer, a type of ground-nesting bird common around here.

Everything is having sex in our grass.

Oooookay, time to give up on mowing this part of the yard until the babies clear out.  So my partner Doug is out mowing the tall grass part of the savannah instead.

I couldn't help it. I cracked up at 'Everything is having sex in our grass.' Everything is raising families in your grass! XD With us, we'd get either mourning doves or robins nesting above the front porch light, house finches nesting above the side door, and even *more* house finches (three different active nests, one year) in the windows of the bedrooms or the upstairs bathroom. I used to love being awakened by cheepcheepcheep! hatchlings yelling for breakfast.

Now you've got me suspecting that the upper Midwest might have a few folks with killdeer wings in a certain universe. Jeez, I never seem to stray far from that setting of yours. :)

I feel that way about the pigeons and other various birds outside my window.

I kept thinking "That ought to be 'de-stuck'", which of course it oughtn't.

I'm surprised the killdeer didn't play the hurt bird game with you to lure you away from its nest.
As for the bunnies, I wish you luck catching them even so young.

I have seen them do that. It always makes me stop and look for the nest! But we didn't see a bird, just the nest.

No problem for me.

I saw an obviously mated pair of killdeers today who've staked out a recently plowed field. I like the look of them: All brown and white streaks.
