The earliest books, the Nantucket set that go back in time, are excellent. The later and larger set that deal with present day ... I can only guess something horrible made him need a ton of money fast. He wiped out the biosphere, twice, in the first chapter and didn't even notice. My suspension of disbelief chewed through the straps and ran screaming down the street.
