Yes, exactly. Some abused kids detach. Others cling, and Lawrence is like a fucking burr. I mean, look what happened when Lawrence was pissed at Stan -- Lawrence left, found some new asshole friends, but couldn't stay away. Soon as Stan got hurt, Lawrence rushed to his defense and brained Shiv on a pile of bricks. Same with Lawrence's family, he is loyal to them whether they deserve it or not.
Specifically, Lawrence's mother is too overloaded to notice, but as Lawrence specified, she's not the nurturer of the family so there's a limit to how much it's fair to expect that of her. Not everyone has all the skills, and obligation does not convey ability.
Lawrence's father was the caretaker of the family. So when he started hitting, things really went to hell. He has a drinking problem and it's wrecked his self-control. On some level he probably does know that this is causing problems, but can't help himself, so is trying to hide it.
