This short story is a piece of fanfic for the apocryphal television show Schrodinger's Heroes, somewhat inspired by recent conversations with my audience regarding the Bechdel test. Begin with Part 1.
Kay finished loading her rifle and holstered her pistol. Then she turned to Morgan. "All right, I'm loaded for bear. Let's go."
"If we don't meet anything worse than bear, we'll be lucky," said Morgan. She opened the door, using it to cover her own body as she pressed against the wall.
Kay stepped into the grassy area that filled the middle of the Ring. She scanned the immediate area, then waved Morgan forward. "All clear for now. Stay close."
They walked through the tall grass, Morgan swinging a stick to startle any hostile wildlife out of their path. Soon something squealed and fled. "Sucker rat!" Morgan yelled, pointing.
Kay whipped out the pistol with her left hand and shot the small pest dead.
"Choice shot," Morgan said. (1)
"One more down, probably dozens left," Kay said. "I wish the rattlers would hurry up and finish eating the damn things.
So, do you have any idea what might come through as the Creature of the Week this time?"
"Negatory. Alex didn't give us much to go on. Ask me again after the stars come out. Then I might have a guess, if the star map matches anything we've recorded before," said Morgan. (2)
"Not getting invaded would be nice," said Kay, "or at least having some warning."
"Well, they have the monitor boards set to raise an alert when the quanta change, so we know something is going on,"
Morgan said. "We haven't been taken totally by surprise since those mutants came through wearing refractive invisibility screens."
"I should've brought my grenades," muttered Kay.

Notes:
1) "Choice" is Hawaiian slang for "great."
2) "Negatory" means "no."

Date: 2011-06-06 12:23 am (UTC)Though surely somewhere there is a bit of dialogue where Kay mentions being loaded for bear around someone new to the compound and said person is surprised to see that when Kay says bear, she means "actually being able to take down a bear if not something larger than that."
Re: Yes...
Date: 2011-06-06 07:24 am (UTC)Good point. I figure a starting point of Army surplus and Texan gun shop goodies, plus whatever the gadgeteers come up with (Alex, Ash, and Bailey all having relevant expertise), followed ultimately by whatever they manage to scavenge from other dimensions.

*laugh* She probably has an elephant gun.
I did get a scene of Alex and Kay in the Army surplus store shopping.

Alex and Kay shopping in the Army surplus store is a fantastic image.
