Backup's talent is very useful in the right context, which this is. He'd be just as useful in society, anywhere the power is iffy, and there's always somewhere like that. Finding jobs for people is really about knowing what they can do and what needs done. People in America are just too lazy and short-sighted to bother.

Well, Backup's family ... kind of sucks, there are later poems about that. The other guys have somewhat healthier family situations but Backup needs them more so that's one reason to stay in the Lacuna. The relationship they have is complicated because it is, in some regards, pretty strong infantilization. But it works for them because they all have these family roles that are familiar and fit together very comfortably. Some people want to be independent, some really don't, and Backup is the latter.
