Community Building Tip: Housing

For my current set of tips, I'm using the list "101 Small Ways You Can Improve Your City.

88. Imagine housing in impossible places. "I love that in Indianapolis, near their new transit center, they looked at a traffic lane as they were redeveloping, and realized they didn't need it. So they put out an RFP for a developer to turn it into housing. Ironically the microhousing that was created is bolted onto a parking garage—which will be ultimately redeveloped, I would hope." — Gabe Klein, founder, CityFi

While I like the idea of more housing, that sounds like an absolutely crappy place to live.  By all means use impossible places, but they might make better greenspace or some other use than housing.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny and mild.  It drizzled a bit last night.

I fed the birds.  I've seen house finches. 

EDIT 9/11/21 -- I gathered yellow coneflower and other wildflower seeds from the wildflower garden and planted them in the prairie garden.  A white zinnia is blooming in the older of the mowed strips.

EDIT 9/11/21 -- I gathered blackberry lily seeds from the wildflower garden and planted them in the prairie garden.

EDIT 9/11/21 -- I started trimming around the purple-and-white garden.

Toads are out tonight!  :D  I saw a large one near the purple-and-white garden, then a medium one on the patio.

As it is now dark, I am done for the night.

Concentrated Solar Thermal Power

Here is a logical application of solar power that lets it work at night.

This is really just a sophisticated version of something that people use all the time in passive solar power: a heat sink.  It has a lot of potential despite the cost quibbles.  Remember that cost is only an issue when there are multiple options and enough cash moving around.  Lower those ceilings and people will use what remains possible -- and this tech, unlike batteries, doesn't require rare earths or fiddly parts.  It uses water and mirrors, which we're not going to run out of.
