This poem was written as part of fishbowl week in July 2024, based on a conversation with

"The Way a River Is Made"
Every choice matters,
some a little, some a lot,
like drips or splashes of water.
A choice never exists in a vacuum;
it exists in relation to other choices,
the way water drops can join
seamlessly into puddles.
Decisions flow through
probability, stirring it
as wind raises waves.
Possibility becomes
performance, turns
ideas into actions, as
clouds condense into rain.
The future isn't something
that just happens at random,
but is something we create.
The future is made of choices,
the way a river is made of raindrops.
It flows around obstacles, picks up
debris, and uses that to carve
a path where none was before.
The future is made of choices,
and so it carries us with it
even as we create it.
Where it will go depends on
where people choose to take it.
