Hmmm... maybe check the original 'hang around and be domesticated' process of wolves, before anyone figured the science out?
Cats are an even better match, I think - they hung around by their own choice. /And/ in modern times, managed to switch from pest-control to emotional regulation/'look adorable' as the main reason to be kept around.
Also, there might be a Native American process for working with horses that I'm not aware of.
Oh, and any system where you help females and breed them with wild males might count - I've heard of people out crossing this way to get wolf dogs, and mustang crosses are popular.
Not exactly domestication bu interspecies cooperation might fit at the far end of the spectrum,too, like the human-dolphin fishing teams. And look at corvids, too - they're smart enough to cultivate us as allies / domesticees.
