A studio apartment isn't suited for long-term use either. It's fine for a young single person who doesn't have much stuff, but people tend to collect things, especially in this culture. Most want to get married and have kids, which requires more space. Just being able to store emergency supplies takes up space.
You can make some tradeoffs between private and public space, but only so much.
