Satellites just revealed a hidden global water crisis—and it’s worse than melting ice
Unprecedented continental drying driven by severe droughts and groundwater overuse are reducing freshwater and contributing to sea level rise.
There's nothing unprecedented about this. In some times, Earth's land has been mostly desert. People have been pumping water out of aquifers for many years. Past civilizations have failed due to running out of water. Cutting down forests has a massive impact on rainfall, because large enough forests make their own weather. Therefore, shrinking aquifers are no surprise and are not new.
Simply reducing water use on individual scale will impact little beyond your own water bill, because by far most water is used by industrial and agricultural giants such as fast fashion. You could eliminate the entire household sector and not make an impact. But there are some options...
Do everything you can to slow the flow and increase the dwell time of water over land. This makes more of it soak in to nourish plants and replenish aquifers. The notes for "An Interest in the Affairs of Your Government" discuss gabions, gully-stuffing, and beavers. On a personal scale, you can plant a rain garden. For larger or steeper land, consider swales and berms.
Think about your clothing use. Buy clothes that last rather than fast fashion. Repair clothes so they last longer. Shop at thrift stores. Consider a capsule wardrobe such as 4x4, 5-Piece French (combine with Common Wardrobe or another base), Weekly Timeless Wardrobe, or Whatever's Clean 13. Upcycle old clothes into different clothes or craft projects. Turn worn-out clothes into rags, which have many uses.
DROUGHT-RESISTANT CROPS AND VARIETIES
Grow a garden that needs little or no supplemental water.
On-Farm Recharge Methods
Farmers can help refill aquifers.
Trees make Rain – there is Science now to Prove It!
Expand forests to increase rain.
