The weather was unseasonably warm for much of the week, stormed a couple of times, was cold and miserable yesterday, and today is sunny and moderate. Spring in Illinois, LOL! :D Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a large flock of mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, a flock of blackbirds, several starlings, several mourning doves, several grackles, a pair of cardinals, a pair of house finches, two crows, a tufted titmouse, a male downy woodpecker, a robin, a phoebe, and a fox squirrel. Currently blooming: crocus, mininature irises, daffodils, winter aconite. Honeybees, bumblebees, and other flying insects are out on sunny days, brawling over the first few blossoms.

Birdfeeding

Today is sunny, breezy, and cool -- a beautiful spring day. :D

I fed the birds. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a fox squirrel.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 3/17/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

My terrarium tools came, along with the hooks that I need for securing pots to the picnic tables. \o/ Of course, what I really want to do is run outside looking for moss, but I have poetry work to do, so that will have to wait a bit.

Also, I discovered a bit of moss that actually is growing on some random bit of escaped fabric between the house and driveway, so that supports my idea of culturing moss on cloth to mock up a little tree.

EDIT 3/17/25 -- I raked leaves away from the oak seedlings in the savanna to expose the daffodils and crocuses now sprouting around them.

EDIT 3/17/25 -- I raked leaves away from more seedlings in the savanna.

I'm excited to discover that the two white irises are sprouting in the white garden at the end of the driveway. :D They didn't stay green over the winter like the others, and looked pretty dead, but they are still there!

EDIT 3/17/25 -- I started trimming grass and dead stems from the inside edge of the wildflower garden. A purple miniature iris is blooming there. :D

I've seen a downy woodpecker up a tree.

As it is now suppertime, I am done for the night.
