Poem: "Impermanent Frost"

Here is the freebie for the November 2013 crowdfunding Creative Jam. It was inspired by a prompt from alexconall.


"Impermanent Frost"


The first of the fey to die
was Jack Frost.

They watched his crown slowly melt,
the icy feathers moulting from his wings,

as global warming reduced the ice
below what he needed to sustain him.

Jack frost was warm and pink
when they laid him in his grave.

The mourners looked around at each other,
wondering who would be next.

Notes:

Jack Frost is a fey spirit associated with winter.

Global warming is a serious problem with implications for permafrost, ice caps, snowfall, and beyond.

Global warming kills. It kills plants and animals and people, sometimes whole species. I'm just putting a face on it in a way that hopefully people will care about.

How strange that a poem about warmth should give me such shivers.

I enjoy turning things around like that. Warm and pink are usually signs of life, but not for someone who is naturally cold and blue. It fits neatly with the upset of natural order that is global warming.

The comics were pretty sympathetic to the Fey (while acknowledging that sometimes the Good Folk weren't the nicest sentients out there). I really hate how the second movie handled 'em.
